In January of 1961, The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and launched a revival of Irish music that continued through the 1980s and 1990s with the success of The Chieftains and Riverdance. Far from the Irish music centers of New York and Chicago, John and Joe Dady- The Dady Brothers-worked out a version of this revival in Rochester, New York. This book tells the story of how the brothers developed a distinctly Irish American mix of folk, Bluegrass and Irish music in the context of the tight-knit, multi-ethnic Catholic community of Rochester's old Tenth Ward. A story of new music created without ever forsaking the traditional ties of community, John and Joe's life reflects not only ethnic revival, but also ethnic endurance.
Music (CD's)
Our very first record album, originally released as an LP in 1979. In the Bluegrass tradition, from banjo breakdowns to original creations. Thanks to our Dad for loaning us the money to produce it!
Irish reels, jigs, hornpipes, and airs recorded on an array of instruments including uilleann pipes, fiddle, tin whistle, octave mandolin, mandolin, bodhran, and guitar. A FAVORITE of Irish dancers everywhere!
Recorded at the Hochstein Music Hall in Rochester with special guests Roxanne Ziegler on harp and Mitzie Collins on hammered dulcimer.
A collection of songs and melodies with a hopeful message. Recorded with some dear friends and gifted artists, including our hero Tommy Makem and his son Rory, it includes Joe's wonderful tribute to Pete Seeger, "The Man with the Banjo", and John's "All Work Out".
This CD commemorates the 175-year anniversary of the Erie Canal, with songs that have become treasured additions to the American music landscape.
A very special collection of standard American Folk, old Country favorites, contemporary and original songs, recorded in Joe's studio in his cabin overlooking Conesus Lake.
A collection of Irish ballads dedicated to our dear friend and the "godfather of Irish music", Tommy Makem.
Soon after the birth of our first grandchild, Declan, I recorded these tunes on the ukulele for his sleepy time.
The songs on this CD are the result of a collaboration with Richard and Cathie Barry (Side by Side Productions) in the creation of "Beautiful Dreamer", a one-act play telling the story of prolific American songwriter Stephen Foster.
This album features a collaboration with some of Rochester's finest musicians and singers. A departure from the Irish folk music we are probably best known for, it has an American Roots feel and is loaded with great songs!
